Supportive care for scoliosis
Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine, most often identified during the growing years. Assessment and monitoring matter more than any single treatment.

What it feels like
Symptoms people describe
- Uneven shoulders or shoulder blades
- One hip sitting higher than the other
- Clothing that consistently hangs unevenly
- A visible rib prominence when bending forward
- Back ache with prolonged standing, more common in adults
Why it happens
Common causes
Idiopathic
Most scoliosis has no identified cause and appears during adolescent growth.
Growth spurts
Curves can progress quickly during rapid growth, which is why monitoring matters.
Structural differences
Leg length difference and other structural factors can contribute.
Adult degenerative change
Curves can also develop later in life as the spine changes.
How we treat it
Our approach
- Assessment and measurementScreening, postural assessment and a clear picture of what is present.
- Referral where appropriateSignificant or progressing curves belong with a medical doctor. We will say so and help you get there.
- Symptom managementManual care and rehabilitation for the pain and stiffness that often accompany a curve.
- Monitoring over timeParticularly through the growing years, regular review matters more than any one session.

Questions
Scoliosis questions
Can adults be treated for scoliosis?
Yes. Adult scoliosis is usually managed rather than corrected: the aim is to control pain, maintain movement and monitor whether the curve is changing. Many adults come to us after years of a curve that was never followed up.
Can chiropractic straighten a scoliosis?
No, and anyone claiming otherwise should be treated with caution. Care focuses on managing symptoms, maintaining movement and monitoring the curve.
At what age should a child be screened?
Adolescence is when idiopathic scoliosis most often appears, so the growing years are the important window.
Does scoliosis always cause pain?
No. Many curves are painless, particularly in children. Pain is more commonly reported by adults.
When should a doctor be involved?
Larger curves and curves that are progressing need assessment by a medical doctor. That referral is part of our role.
